4th ¡§Youth Trekker¡¦s Wanted Campaign¡¨.

Enjoy Taiwan Your Way

Through its ¡§Youth Trekker¡¦s Wanted¡¨ campaign, the National Youth Commission (NYC) has over the past three years awarded travel funds to nearly 50 youths from around the world to help them achieve their Taiwan travel dreams. NYC is again welcoming international youth to Taiwan in the 4th ¡§Youth Trekker¡¦s Wanted Campaign¡¨. Applications must be submitted by December 11th, 2011. We encourage all international youth aged 18~30 (dob between Jan 1st, 1981 and Dec 31, 1993) who love to travel and share their experiences to submit their dream Taiwan itinerary for consideration. Submitted itineraries must be 10 days or longer, center on a theme chosen by the applicant, and reflect youthful energy and enthusiasm. Once completed, upload your entry to the official activity website. We will award the best 20 entrants with US$2,000 ~ US$3,000, good toward making their Taiwan dream trip come true!

Experience Life, Taiwan Style!

The National Youth Commission offers a variety of innovative travel plans and programs to encourage international backpack travelers to visit and enjoy Taiwan. Through activities at 41 Youth Travel Spots and an extensive youth travel service network (including the value-packed Youth Travel Card, Digital Tour Buddy, attractive rates at Youth Guesthouses, TR Rail Pass discounts, and free Tour Buddy guide programs), the NYC opens the door for international youth to fully explore Taiwan and get ¡§up close and personal¡¨ with our diverse people, society, culture and environment.

Ready, Set ¡K Go! Share Your Adventure in Taiwan with the World

From March through August 2011, the NYC welcomed eighteen 3rd ¡§Youth Trekkers Wanted¡¨ campaign finalists to Taiwan. Each was eager to commence personal journeys through Taiwan, as outlined in their winning itineraries. Looking to gain a better understanding of Taiwan¡¦s world-renowned artisanal leather industry, Hong Kong leather designer Kelvin Lai visited leather artisans from Taitung in the southeast to Taipei¡¦s Xinyi District in the north and all parts in between. Roux, a youth traveler from Paris, planned his itinerary to the rhythms of Taiwan¡¦s cinema. Roux experienced the island by bicycle as portrayed in the 2005 film Island Etude and followed Director Hou Hsiao-hsien¡¦s footsteps through the picturesque hillside town of Jiufen, the setting for Hou¡¦s seminal 1989 film City of Sadness. Enric from Spain arranged his itinerary to explore the ins and outs of Taiwan tea and tea culture. From world-popular ¡§bubble teas¡¨ to high mountain Oolongs, Enric is enamored with both traditional Taiwan culture and the ¡§art¡¨ of exceptional teas. Keir, an energetic teacher from Canada, used his Taiwan trek to climb Yushan, the island¡¦s highest peak, as well as scuba dive and surf off Kenting and white water raft down Huanlien¡¦s Xiuguluan River. He even rose before sunrise to join early morning shadowboxing exercises at Taipei¡¦s Sun Yat-Sen Memorial.

Taiwan offers unlimited vacation trek possibilities. All it takes is imagination to fill an itinerary with interesting and exciting things to do. Taiwan is a treasure house of culture, nature and friendly people waiting for you to discover! We warmly welcome all international youth aged 18~30 to submit their creative travel itinerary ideas before the December 11th, 2011 deadline. You too can make your Taiwan dreams come true! Visit the official activity website at:http://youthtravel.tw/youthtrekker/ for all the details.

Chai Found Music Workshop 2011 Concert Tour in Canada

Chai Found Music Workshop (CFMW), the 20-year old and internationally acclaimed sizhu music (Chinese chamber music) ensemble from Taiwan, is to perform in three festivals this summer invited by Ottawa Chamber Music Society, Vancouver Summer Music Festival Society and Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. The Council for Cultural Affairs in Taiwan sponsors CFMW¡¦s concert tour as part of the centenary celebrations of The Republic of China, i.e. Taiwan, presenting Canadian audience with traditional Taiwanese and Chinese music in upcoming August.

Chai Found Music Workshop will first perform in the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, followed by the MusicFest Vancouver and the Fortune Cooking Festival at Harbourfront Center in Toronto. The music festival tour comprises three formal concerts and three music workshops. CFMW will showcase the beauty and creativity of Taiwan to audience through diverse music programs, ranging from classic Taiwanese folk songs, and traditional music to contemporary music by Taiwanese composers.

The Ottawa Chamber Music Festival is the largest chamber music festival of its kind in the world. It presents almost 100 concerts and attracts over 80,000 listeners every year. The MusicFest Vancouver runs 10 days with over 40 concerts and educational events annually since 2001. The music feast brings the most talented artists in the world together, and performing with passion, skill and creativity. The Harbourfront Centre is an innovative non-profit organization that creates arts and cultural events and activities of excellence that enliven, educate and entertain a diverse public. It presents over 4,000 events and attracts 12 million visits each year. Chai Found Music Workshop is the featured program in 2011 Fortune Cooking Festival.

The Chai Found Music Workshop has been active in national and international music scenes since 1991. It has gained the reputation of being one of the foremost Sizhu ensembles in the world. Over the past years, the group has been performing contemporary classical music as well as traditional Taiwanese and Chinese music in numerous concerts in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Moreover, to attract and engage with the younger audience, CFMW creates new productions that combine choreography and drama in their music performances.

Postscript:

Sizhu, literally ¡§Silk and Bamboo,¡¨ refers to string and wind musical instrument, silk being the traditional material from which strings have historically been made in China, and bamboo being the material from which the Chinese flutes such as the Di and Xiao are made. The term sizhu by extension also came to refer to instrumental music in general, especially that played indoors.

Sizhu music originated in the teahouses of Southern Chinese provinces at the end of the 19th century. The musicians were sitting around a table, playing music and drinking tea. The instruments of Chai Found Music Workshop are the six most representative of this tradition: Erhu (two-string Chinese violin), Di (Chinese bamboo flutes), Guzheng (Chinese zither), Pipa (Chinese lute), Yangqin (Chinese dulcimer), Ruan (Chinese banjo or guitar).

Taiwanese youths bring traditional folk arts

The Taipei Youth Folk Sports Group, which consists of 26 primary and junior high students, will delight family audiences here on July 23, 2011. The group will present the beauty of Taiwan¡¦s traditional folk arts to Canadians, including rope-skipping, shuttlecock-kicking, harvest dancing with bamboo sticks and diabolo-spinning, will be performed by these young sports artists.

The Taipei Youth Folk Sports Group was founded by the Taipei City Hall 23 years ago in an effort to preserve Taiwanese folk arts heritage. The Group has visited numerous cities around the world every year since its founding, and has earned critical acclaim.
Nowadays, rope-skipping and diabolo-spinning are well-known and popular folk sports among youths around the world, and international competitions of these sports are quite common. However, by introducing new elements of dance, martial arts and drama into these folk art sports, Taiwan has come to develop its own unique style of performing. With precise body movements, rhythm and team work, these variations add greater depth to this traditional art, making it all the more exquisite.

For instance, rope skipping can be performed in many different ways. Performers swing ropes to make a cross, many waves or loops. And they can jump and shuttle in and out freely with one, two or more whirls of the rope. All the movements weave a beautiful heart touching story.
As for shuttlecock, players kick, pull or stop the schuttlecocks with feet quickly, gracefully and precisely. They not only wave the ropes, but also run and jump to make shuttlecock kicking an exciting performance.

The harvest dance takes its form from the aboriginal tribe Ami¡¦s celebration of the harvest. In tandem with the tapping bamboo sticks, performers dance precisely across the bamboo sticks.

The diabolo spins like a dancing fairy along a string tied on two sticks in the performers¡¦ hands. The audience can view many beautiful movements, such as whirling, swinging, tossing and catching the diabolo while performers simultaneously dance and weave. Two, even three diaboloes can be played at a time.

The 26 students selected to form this year¡¦s group have undergone four years of intensive training during their extracurricular time in school. In addition to Vancouver, they will also visit Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto in their July tour performances, serving as the ambassadors of culture and friendship.
