2012 Huayu Enrichment Scholarship

Purpose

Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is executed in accordance with "Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) International Student Directions" (see Appendix 1) of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to encourage international students (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao SAR students are not eligible) to undertake Huayu courses in Taiwan.

Award Value

A Monthly stipend is 25,000 NTD. Recipients are responsible for their own expenses.

Number of Scholarship

Seven scholarships (7 ¡Ñ 12 months) will be provided for the academic year of 2012.

Duration

Huayu Enrichment courses will include 2-month summer classes (June, July or August 2012), along with short term classes, which may last 3, 6 or 9 months to a year respectively. With the exception of summer classes, in principle, the duration of the scholarship is from September 1st, 2012 to August 31st, 2013. If recipients fail to come to Taiwan for enrolment during the above time, they will forfeit their right to retain their scholarships. Scholarship funding will become effective on the date of the recipient's enrolment. Scholarship funding will end on the month of the expiration of the scholarship or if the scholarship is revoked.

Eligibility

Applicants with Canadian citizenship with excellent academic performance, and are of good moral character. Candidates with one of the following qualifications may not apply:

  1. Overseas Chinese students or a national of the R.O.C.
  2. Are currently as a registered student at a Mandarin Language Centre or has been a degree seeking student at any universities or colleges in Taiwan
  3. Has already received a Huayu Enrichment Scholarship or a Taiwan scholarship, in the past
  4. Is an exchange student to Taiwan during the scholarship period
  5. Is currently receiving financial benefits from the Taiwan government or other educational institutions

Application

Applicants need to submit the following documents to the Cultural Division of TECO in Canada by March 31st, 2012 (postmarked). Applications and related documents submitted will not be returned to the sender.

  1. A completed Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Application Form (see Appendix 2)
  2. Photo copies of passport or any other documents that can verify the nationality of the applicant
  3. Photo copies of the certificate of the highest credential and transcript
  4. Photo copies of the applications to the Mandarin Language Centre
  5. The terms of agreement with applicants' signature (see Appendix 3)

Note:
Recipients' whose award periods are nine months or longer must submit their Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL Learner Level) score transcripts to the institutions where they are studying within their award period. Failure to do so will cost the recipient a month's grant subsidy. Additionally, recipients should pay for the test on their own. The latest date for submitting a valid TOCFL document is one month prior to the completion of their study term.

Selection Process

  1. Upon evaluating each applicant's documents, overall performance and motivation, the Cultural Division of TECO in Canada will select successful candidates and alternate candidates which will be placed on a waiting list. Candidates are to be notified by April 30th, 2012.
  2. The recipient should study at a registered Mandarin Language Centre approved by the MOE (see Appendix 4), and apply for admission according to the regulations of the center. Once admitted, the recipient should send a photocopy of the admission letter to the Cultural Division of TECO in Canada by June 30th (summer classes admission should be sent by May 31st), 2012 for confirmation. Recipients who do not send their documents before the deadline will be disqualified from the scholarship selection process.
